NEW ADVENTURES IN POP 030

The group is formed by one of the most active and versatile members of ELECTRIC SIX, the daughter of Patti Smith and Fred “Sonic” Smith (MC5) and the musical director for UNCLE KRACKER could be called anything but predictable. The treasure trove of musical culture found between those two comes out to shine in this group’s songs, and this is exactly what happens on their second release on Elefant Records and New Adventures In Pop. “Saturday Knife Fight” opens the limited edition 7” to the rhythm of northern soul, with echoes of Edwyn Collins. The song has a complicated but powerful arrangement structure that feels turbulent, but at the same time tremendously addictive. “Jack The Ripper” uses the metaphor of the well-known serial killer to talk about broken hearts, with a sound that falls somewhere between ambient electronic pop and melancholic indie pop, not too far off from our beloved TREMBLING BLUE STARS. “DSL #12” is solid proof of the project’s complexity: a pop base with new-wave spirit fed by synthesizers with space-age arrangements, all of which comes together perfectly in this tremendously suggestive song, topped off with burning guitars. It’s incredible. “Blownzia/Ripper (Reprise)” is an instrumental that tests the limits of BELLE GHOUL’s universe: between dreaming and cabaret, between Danny Elfman and Kurt Weill, like a story that you could never guess the ending to. And we hope the story never ends.

Track Name: Saturday Knife Fight
Everyone comes down when the feeling is right
And the kids come around for a saturday knife fight
Into downtown, and get under the lights but
The smile on her face gets you out of the place

Falling in and out of love in a singular night
And you can’t keep up with all the saturday knife fights
The rides and the lights, and the taking of life but
You do whatcha do…

And I told you once, I told you twice, but
You do whatcha do…

Saturday Knife Fight
Do what you do, what you do

So the walls come down but the water is high
And the kids run around picking saturday knife fights
The sky’s falling down and they’re full of delight with
The fear and demands, and the blood on their hands

Spreading anger and disease, in a singular night
Well I’ll never understand all the saturday knife fights
The world’s falling down, still you’re coming around, but
You do whatcha do…

And I told you once, I told you twice, but
You do whatcha do…

Saturday Knife Fight
Do what you do, what you do

The world falls down and you’re still coming round here

And the kids come around, and the kids come around
(Ah, ah, ahhhhh)
And the kids come around, and the kids come around

The world falls down and you’re still coming round here
Track Name: Jack The Ripper
Not a star in the sky tonight
But the demons, they won’t stop creepin’
Just an hour ‘til I take flight
You should’ve waited until the weekend

Like I’m crashing the high school dance
Like I’m watching, beneath the bleachers
You were always so good in class
Was there something that I could teach you... to

Step inside my heart, step inside my heart
Step inside my heart always

And you told me about your saints
But I never saw your soldiers
When I thought that my ship came in
It was only rolling over

All the things that we cannot change
Must’ve led me into this moment
I’m fine, I’ll be just fine, but
I could not give you to another... to

Step inside my heart, step inside my heart
Step inside my heart all the way

Step inside my heart, step inside my heart
Step inside my heart all the way

And I’ll stay if you ask today
If you wait, I’ll be gone tomorrow
All the things that we cannot change
Must’ve led me into this moment

Alright! I said, alright now
With the razor across her shoulder
I’m fine, I’ll be just fine here
And the ships came in but she never got around to…

Step inside my heart, step inside my heart
Step inside it one last time
Track Name: DSL #12
Dirty sick lover, you should have come over
Dirty sick lover, you should have come over

You knew that I would say that, you knew that I would say that
You knew that I would say that, you knew that I would say that

You’re falling apart as you come down the street
You call me, in pieces, at quarter to three
But don’t try to say you did all that for me
I come up, you go down but you’ll never come around

You knew that I would say that
